Students give back to local community

At Mercia Academy, we are incredibly proud of 24 of our Duke of Edinburgh’s Award students, who, as part of the scheme have provided 416 hours of voluntary support.

Across the community, our selfless learners have supported local sports clubs and Park Runs as well as helping younger pupils with reading, leading activities for Brownies and Cubs, and even befriending care home residents.

One of our Silver Award students, Lila, 15, shared her experience: “I volunteered at Cedar Court Residential Care Home and became close friends with Jean, who’s 94. We talked every week and even celebrated her birthday together. I still keep in touch with her now.”

This year’s DofE cohort includes 18 Bronze and six Silver participants, each contributing an average of 17 hours so far – with more to come. The social value of their volunteering is estimated at £2,662.

Claire Copley, our Careers Lead and DofE Manager, said: “Our students have shown real commitment, creativity and compassion. They’ve stepped up to support others and developed skills that will stay with them for life.”

We’re proud to be part of a national movement that’s helping young people grow in confidence, resilience and purpose – while giving back to the communities that support them.
